I respectfully disagree with the statement that "Nobody replaces just the regulator".
I had a 2000 9-5 Aero which I drove for 280K miles and a 2004 9-5 ARC which I drove almost 100K miles. Every 100K miles I replaced the voltage regulator as a preventive measure; this was because the brushes wear down. At 100K miles they typically had 25% - 30% of their life remaining.
If you allow the brushes to wear down they may cause damage to the commutator in the alternator; then you will have to spring for a rebuilt alternator. Over 48 years of Saab ownership I've always replaced the alternator voltage regulator due to brush wear, usually at 100K miles.
Removing the alternator on a 2004 9-5 ARC is a little work but not impossible; I know, I had one.
