9-5 Aero engine knock Posted by serge [Email] (#1363) [Profile/Gallery] (more from serge) on Thu, 7 May 2015 21:25:03 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi, folks. I am usually found in the vintage and Sonett groups for the care and feeding of my '71 96, and I have a wonderful '09 9-5 Aero that is the obverse in about every way of the 96. I open the hood of the 96, and I dive right in. I open the 9-5 hood with a flourish and go "holy hell...what's what?" I've driven Saabs exclusively for forty years, and I worked on my own up through the classic 900 days. After that, to the mechanic I go and I'm fortunate to have a good one. All of this preamble is to preempt (probably without success) any questioning along the lines of "is this guy an idiot?"
I'm looking for advice regarding an issue I've had for some time which is a consistent pinging as one accelerates from a stop. It continues through at least third gear before it settles out. My guy has looked at it, but absent any clear codes being thrown, he shrugs and does nothing. He did point out that the owners manual refers to an acceptable amount of "knock" under load. I wouldn't say the pinging is "subtle," but with the windows raised, I can't hear it. I use 93 octane, ethanol-free fuel. Consistently, every time.
I'm going in next week to check a small leak of PWS fluid, so I am going to preemptively replace the CPS. I just turned 100K I had read a couple of opinions that the CPS can be the culprit in situations like this, and that it doesn't necessarily throw codes that make it clear it needs replacing.
So, what do people think about this problem and the CPS as possible cause? I have averaged 12-13 years per Saab, and this should be my last one. With the way things are with the marque, I'd better start learning to fend for myself. It's funny...I could have the engine and gearbox pulled from the 96 in the amount of head-scratching time I would spend contemplating a serpentine belt change. I am truly intimidated by the packaging of the 9-5 drive train.
Big thanks in advance...cheers
serge
