Throttle body, how often to clean?

I've done this a couple times on different cars. One wasn't very dirty with no noticeable change. One was dirtier and hopefully cleaning fixed some stuttering at idle, once to the point of stalling. It seems much better.
As regular maintenance, how often should the throttle body be cleaned? Are there variables that would require more frequent cleaning? What does the cleaning accomplish? Allows the butterfly to close fully and cleans and lubricates the pivot points?
Makes me wonder about cleaning the MAF next. Any schedule for that?
