Some people advocate cutting off the slits. I presume that leaves just a hole. As I understand it the slits were intended to function a bit like a one way valve. They keep dirt out, but also don't let the dirt in the lines drain. I'm not sure modding them is needed versus more regular checking that they aren't clogged.
What experiences have others had with cutting the slits off?
I've got the slit rubber mostly cleared out. I'll check again when the car is on a lift and I can get a better look. My flow rate is much improved.
