Over the highway trucks, box style and tractor-trailes, and heavy construction equipment. I believe we started doing these test as part of the warranty requirements on a new Cat front loader. Engine oil, tranny oil, differential(s) oil, all at every maintenance cycle with samples sent to Cat for analysis.
Sort of forgot about it until I hit the 200K mile point in my 2000 9-5 about 10 years ago. As you said, these are great at discovering internal problems that have not yet manifisted themselves into a BIG problems.
Some posters at BITOG do these tests at every oil change. To me that is over-kill but it is their car, money, and decision.
