A simple "backyard" method of determining if the compressor is doing its job is to simply check the temp of the low pressure fitting on the compressor after it has been running a bit - should be very cold, even frosty. If it is, it's a good indication the compressor is working and the evaporator is getting just as cold, and you go from there in your search.
One thing that is not often checked is the operation of the recirculation control on the air flow circuit. Mine was stuck open (outside air only) and it really surprised me how much effect it had, particularly when trying to cool down a very hot car - it seemed like the AC had just stopped working. To check turn the fan to high, push the recirculation control, and listen for a change in the sound of the rushing air. If no change, the lever arm is broken, a relatively easy fix.
