Crank Position Sensor or Fuel Pump?

Hi,
I have a 2000 Wagon with the 2.3t engine and 140k miles. It was running OK. As a preventative measure I installed a new fuel pump assembly from eeuro. The install went fine and the car started right up. I started it a day later to move it out of the garage to make room for my son's car. Today I drove it ~40 miles and stopped at a gas station. it ran great on the way there but when I tried to start it the engine would crank, but not start. Initially I got a short sputter, but then nothing.
The car has the original CPS so I figured it had given up the ghost. I let the car cool for 2 hours and attempted to start it again. Nothing. I pulled up the rear seat and opened the fuel pump hatch. I could not hear anything. I got a $300 tow home :-(
CPS or fuel pump?
I checked fuse #19 and it is good. I don't have a schematic for the pump, but there are 4 wires. A large red and black and two smaller gauge wires. I assume that the Large red is positive and the large black is ground for the pump. The other two wires are for the gauge. I applied 12V and got nothing.
I went to see if I could read 12V on the input to these wires, but the battery was dead. I am leaving it to charge over night.
The old fuel pump went out with the trash, or I would try that one.
Any other troubleshooting ideas?
Has anyone had a fuel pump last <50 miles?
Is there a way to tell if the CPS is good?
Any other troubleshooting ideas?
Drive Safe,
Joe
