I think they changed when the hub design changed in 2002+ (although I am not 100% sure about this).
Anyway, the later ball joints use 3 larger holes for 3 larger bolts AND a larger diameter shaft. I think the bolts are M8 on earliers ones and M9 on the latter ones - or maybe M9 and M10.
If ones want to use a later control arm with an earlier ball joint then the ball joint holes could be just drilled out.
