im not entirely certain which trim piece you mean. If its textured, sanding and polishing wont help much. I have had success with refinishing plastic to a matte finish by sandblasting. If it is a glossy surface you can get good results with sanding and polishing. But either way you'd have to remove it.
And if you can remove it I'd say get a replacement from Goldwing or English&Swedish Spares.
