The battery is CR1632. There are lots of posts on this board about this. There's a hole in side of the key. Put a paper clip in it and push in to pop the cover off the back of the key. Replace the battery. Press unlock four times after replacing the battery. Watch the plastic catch on the cover when popping it off, it's fiddly and can be damaged.
To answer your question, yes you can do this as a DIY.
