Very carefully remove the hatch trim at the back end of the rear windows and the top trim with the light. The pin holding the headliner will have to come out but I broke mine also. Then you can lower the rear end of the headliner enough to get at the gas shocks. Make sure you support the hatch properly because it is quite heavy and dangerous when not supported. I used a long two by four resting on the ground with shock cords to secure it in place. There are clips on the inside ends of the shocks to prevent them coming off the ball joints that can be tricky to remove and reinstall. I used needle nose pliers and a strong flash light. Lubricate the ball joints.
