Is your 9-5 pre 2006 or 2006 or newer?
There's more space in the back on the 2006 and newer, as they moved the hubs out a little.
I think a lot of folks are running too much tire. I've got 9-5s with 225/45 17s and 9-5s with 235/45 17s and I like the smaller tires better.
If the 16s you have are sufficiently wide (like stock 9-5 16 inch wheels) I think the 215/55 16 is a real nice amount of compliance. At least it is on a General AS 03.
Bear in mind the amount of compliance is keyed to the brand and model of tire you choose and how much inflation you run. Some folks would time out their tire purchase so the tread is thick (more cushion) through winter and the tread will be worn down once Spring is fully here. That same tire will feel lighter and more sporty, then. Reduce your inflation through Winter; boost it back up as weather warms and your struts become more compliant.
