For want of a good tool, many jobs take much longer to do than they should. I gave up on fabricating my own tool. I really need to learn how to weld. I also need to set up a mini machine shop in my garage.
I got the job done by pairing a five-pound slide hammer with a pilot bearing puller attachment. (Both of these are loaner tools.) I could not lock the jaws far enough apart to make it a 30 second job. So the seal slowly disintegrated and deformed as I encouraged it to come out, and the ATF made for a slippery go of it. I was finally successful only when I held one of the puller hooks in place with a finger while I worked the slide hammer with the other hand. I probably spent at least a half hour's work on that one stinking seal.
