If it clicks as you turn, and the clicking is in sync with the rotation of the wheels it's the CV joint. in this case the clicking would increase linearly with the speed of the wheels. the click goes away as you turn back and go straight. best to do this in a parking lot where you can test. good to have some along who can listen for the click ... but it's usually the outer CV and it usually obvious which side. the click (as you know) is not subtle). a failing CV joint will not be intermittent, the click is easily reproduced, and will only get worse with time, until it breaks. A CV fails slowly though so you generally have plenty of time. It wont leave you stranded unless you have been ignoring it for a long time.
Ball joints don't turn and won't click in sync with the rotation of the wheel. They will knock (or clunk) with suspension travel. They can also moan in the early stages. The sound may become more pronounced when the wheel is turned. The sound of a failing ball joint can appear to be intermittent, mainly because in the early stages of wear and failure it will click (clunk) only with a specific combination of wheel travel and angle of turn.
If you have an oscillation or pulsing (felt in the steering wheel) on acceleration (that stops as you let off the gas) it's the inner driver.
yours sounds like the CV joint. The CV can be replaced, or the entire axle (which includes both inner and outer CV). Beware of rebuilds, lots of bad experiences with these (personal experience and tales from others on the board)
