I've seen a post from Mike Miller tech editor for the BMW Roundel and he had said that the best running BMW engines he's seen all see elevated RPM's (once fully warmed) on a regular basis. By elevated we're talking 80% of redline. For our SAABs that's above 5,000 rpm.
I try to do that with my BMW. I hold the car in 3rd gear on freeway on-ramps at least two or three times a week. I do it with our '04 Aero by putting in Sport mode where it doesn't shift until north of 5k. Yes it's great fun but you really need to pay attention to what's in front of you, and the speedometer (and the tach when driving a stick).
IMO it is good for the engine. Both our SAAB and BMW engines run extremely well.
