It is a royal pain to do the thermostat from that side and I always try to sell the job when timing belt is replaced because it is much easier to reach the thermostat from that side.
You need to have the thermostat bolted down since the pipe is usually heavily corroded to the thermostat housing. And since the oil dipstick bracket, engine lift bracket and pipe bracket is woven together in an intricate pattern that only the trolls know about, you need to be able to rotate and pull the pipe out in increments while at the same time lift and rotate the oil dipstick tube and fiddle the lift bracket out of the way.
The dipstick tube feels like it is welded to the engine block so a lot of force is needed to make it come out of the block while at the same time you have to be careful not to break the aluminum tube bracket.
When doing the thermostat from the timing belt, you only need to loosen the bolt a few turns, carefully cut a groove in the thermostat housing and split the housing open with a screw driver and then you can wiggle it off the tube while that one stays on the engine.
