Plenty - well, some - experience building speaker boxes and inserting drivers, then listening to them. When the foam surrounds on my AR-something woofers bit the dust, or more accurately turned to dust, I went through a thought experiment comparing repair to replace. In the end I replaced the woofers, using advice from MCM Electronics' speaker specialists. Didn't sound the same: specifically, the bass was lacking. Didn't bother me at the time as I was using a subwoofer as well, but when the Saab's woofer crapped out, I decided that repair was a more reliable course.
Most of the time involved was waiting for the glue to dry. Most of the work was extracting the speaker from the wall of the cargo hold, and you need to do that whether you repair or replace.
