I think I'm looking for something that will be better on gas. I'm holding the Odyssey till it dies or they do a hybrid... 15 years later they still get the same mpg aound town...
It is a age/reliability factor for the inlaws. They aren't quite that mechanically oriented, so have higher levels of concern about the safety or what may be coming. If it don't break, I squeak by. But my comfort level is broader than theirs, and I'm generally close enough to come deal with it if something goes wrong...
I barely wrench now, but do some depending on time space.... But I'm reasonably good at diagnostics, so I pick the stuff depending on how fair the repair cost seems or how easily I can do it... .
Most of the crossovers/suv's don't do very well on gas, either. Not that the saab did when she drove it either. I'd really like to get a mpg leg up on at least one vehicle. The acura is a bit better than the saab, but we only get into the upper 20's/low 30's on an all highway run, which are rare these days. Both end up in the teens or occasional low 20's when she's at the wheel with her rush hour friends.
I was just hoping to 'like' a bit more something we are paying $$$ for. I've driven many cars well past their lifespans, but I've always felt really good about the replacements... I had a 1990 Acura legend that I loved past 200k before the Saab. Saab and Acura will be the first sub 200k car in awhile, but I also don't drive the numbers I used to.
None of the cars I've driven really give me much enthusiasm beyond being newer and perhaps less travelled down the worn out page. Ours have been reliable, but are just coming up on too much corrosion and maintenance due to justify keeping. If the saab was an aero and didn't have the rust and wear, I'd have no problem dropping yet another major service into it. My wife doesn't need it to be new, either, as long as it's presentable. She knows it will just get bumped in the parking lot.
I just hate for driving to turn that practical.... I may have to get the motorcycle back out and look for something topless for the non minivan days! Or a 20's open touring car would at least give me the seating if not the mpg! We may have to go a bit smaller to get there.
