I've had oddball problems in the past six months with the electrics in our '04 Sport Kombi but they've been unrelated issues. A bad ignition switch caused the caused the car to throw numerous false positive codes and to even die in the street on my wife once. It immediately restarted but it was VERY unnerving. One symptom was the dash lights going off and on.
Since we got the car in '11 we had numerous seemingly random messages appear on the SID (info display) concerning the airbag and seat-belts as well as the chime going on and off at random. In the past six months it got progressively worse and the chiming was driving us NUTS. I checked the wires under the seat and they were OK. The light up above the windshield works fine. The last straw was the dash lights going on and off at random. I finally changed out the SID and the car has been asymptomatic for two weeks.
You can find used SID units on the on line auction sites for $40 - $75. There's even a source in Sweden that sells new '04 - '05 ones for about $65. Yours is an '03 and I believe that uses a different SID than the '04 - '05 ones. If you try that route you need to get one preferably from your production year.
