Recently a friend lost her brakes in a 12 year old Nissan going downhill. She hit the car in front of her and everyone was banged up but able to walk away. Country road and a lot of space for the cars to spin to a stop. Both cars are probably a total loss.
Rusted out brake lines lost all the brake fluid. No time to use handbrake or do anything else. It was a total shock for her.
I was able to catch my rusted out brake lines before going any further on our 2004 9-5 Aero with about 196k miles. The brake pedal fade was huge! A small hole in the rust is all it took. Regular State and my own Inspections failed to catch it probably because everything looks rusted under the SAAB.
Our cars are getting older and replacement of parts is the only way to keep them going. I suggest a preemptive replacement of the brake lines for SAABs that are over a decade old and reside in the salt belt states.
Drive Safe.
