what the weird plastic part is that I found that was jammed in between shifter and housing. Problem manifested itself as a stuck key; managed to jiggle key out and it was clear that shifter/ignition interlock mechanism was compromised somehow. Tore the center console assembly out, and before I started disassembling metal gearshift/ignition assembly (looks incredibly over-engineered), I poked around through the holes on the side and found a broken off piece of something wedged between the shifter housing and metal part of shifter, preventing it from moving fully into Park position. I plucked it out with a needlenose from the passenger side and reveled in my good fortune. Since it was the same width (more or less) as the jalousie and looke like what could be an end cap or something, I assumed it was part of that rapidly decaying part, and hurriedly reassembled console since it was already late at night.
I may have acted too soon in buttoning everything up. I looked at a photo of replacement jalousie, and it has nothing that remotely looks like what I plucked out. The broken thing I took out was of similar width and color as jalousie, but is shaped like a three sided rectangle, with one side clearly broken off from something else. In the middle is a small white plastic nib that protrudes from the other side, like a bumper or stop. It's really small, and is made of crappy, rigid plastic (should've been my first clue - not as flexible as jalousie material.
Maybe I shouldn't overthink this, but I'm just hoping that there's no more remnants of whatever the hell this ting is a part of waiting to fall into the complicated mess that makes up the shift/ignition assembly. I've looked at EPC and can't ID the origins of the offending detritus.
Any ideas?
My car is a model year 2000, and I've noticed a rapidly escalating rate of plastic decomposition across the board. I could care less about trim and convenience components, but I worry about crumbling plastics integral to basic operation. Scary.
