Just want to echo Anders comment further up this chain.
Given the age of your car, if your positive battery cable is still original, it probably is compromised at least to some degree by internal corrosion and overheating at the lug.
It would be well worthwhile to do a voltage drop test on it and replace it if necessary when you do this job. Even if the terminal ends look reasonable, the proof is in the loaded voltage drop test.
The resistance in the cable from the corrosion can cause the battery to not get a full and efficient charge even from a good alternator, and can also cause the alternator to run hot and shorten its life.
