My experience with Airtex brand water pump 1 Saabers Like This Post! Posted by Dano in Texas [Email] (#1125) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Dano in Texas) on Thu, 14 Jul 2016 06:59:23 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
In October 2015 at 119,000 miles I replaced the water pump housing on our 2004 Aero wagon due to excessive noise I isolated to the serpentine belt area (but no leaks). As it turns out, it was the A/C compressor but that's another story.
Anyway, I chose the Airtex brand pump based on previous experience using one in our 2003 Aero sedan with no issues. The price on the Airtex is low and build quality looks good.
My wife drove the wagon as her commuter car (200 miles/week) for the next 8 months. When she retired from work we decided to sell the car and it sat in the driveway. That's when I noticed a couple of drops of coolant underneath and investigated. After removing the bottom splashguard I noticed where coolant had been seeping down and collecting under the A/C compressor and apparently evaporating when the car was being driven.
Rereading the Airtex installation instructions it states there could be some drainage from the weep hole immediately after install. But 8 months later, to still have a small amount of leakage from the weep hole was unacceptable to me especially since I was selling the car.
So, I "splurged" and ordered the Saab OEM water pump housing from Eeuroparts at a pleasantly affordable $100+ and installed it. Zero leaks after installation and the pump survived the drive from Texas back to California with the new owner.
So, my experience with this brand is 50/50 success. Anyone else have experiences with Airtex?
