Any ACC codes when you do the self test? Press OFF and AUTO and wait 30 seconds or so. Do a search on A/C codes and look in the owners manual if you don't know what I am talking about.
When you say Freon registers near red zone, are you hooking up a gauge to the low side? It should read 25-35 PSI. this is a variable volume A/C system so pressure will vary. Is the low side line near the connector cold?
Usually faults are the result of leaks. Could be a worn line, a leaking Shraeder valve, a leak at an O ring.
