Among them: effective compression (i.e. the engine compression ratio
convolved with the turbo compression), ambient temperature
and humidity, intercooler efficiency, petrol antidetonation ability, etc.
All being equal, the same turbocharged SAAB driven in a hot and dry
environment will need much higher octane petrol to avoid
detonation than when driven in a wet and cold day.
In all my many years of experience with turbocharged SAAB I have not
detected any difference in consumption associated with petrol grade.
What I did indeed easily detected is a drop in performance when using
low octane petrol in hot summer days. The way to detect detonation
is to floor the accelerator and check if the turbo gauge kicks back
after few seconds and stabilizes at a point below the maximum
point reached when either the external temperature was lower or the engine
itself was cooler and high petrol grade was being used. This lack of performance is present mainly under hard acceleration and it is difficult or impossible to detect under normal driving conditions.
So, if you detect detonation is because you are not driving in a petrol saving mode. If you are concerned with petrol costs and drive trying to save petrol you will probably never encounter detonation and therefore the use of high octane petrol will be most likely be a waste of money.
