That sounds logical to me.
If you pop the carpeted cover off the side of the airbox (right side of console, left side of passenger footwell), you will see the two silver coolant lines joining up to the heater core, as well as likely some staining or wetness.
Other than spillage in the cabin, the process of swapping out the heater core isn't much more difficult than then cabin filter. In fact its a little easier to get to.
