I think you'll be OK as long as you only loosen, and not remove, the tensonier pulley. I don't know how much slack that'd give you though.
A bigger concern is why? The idler and tensioner pulleys keep the belt centered. If the belt is shifting laterally then I'd check the tightness of the other pulleys as well as the state of their bearings and the tensioner spring on that pulley (check the marks). The timing belt is good as long as it's fully supported by the 5 cog pulleys; the relative position of the belt laterally on the cogs is not so important. It shouldn't walk around the cog pulleys once the idlers are all adjusted and locked down.
