8mm Only ! I have changed out only two alternators, but on the very first one of those the lower bolt was very frozen by corrosion - and even with 8mm bit tapped in, it rounded. I had to use a Snap-On easy out, which fortunately did the trick when hammered in.
These alternator bolts are the same physical size and thread as the serpentine belt tensioner bolt - When you replace the alternator, use one of those. Those bolts are grade 10.9 instead of 8.8 so they will not strip as easily. After my experience with the stripped bolt, I ordered equivalent 10.9 bolts from Fastenal and the two alternators I have replaced are installed with those.
Good luck on the rest of your project!
