Generally I consider the tstat a wear item to be replaced every few years, but you do get messages from the car on the 9-5 so you might not need to treat it as much this way so much on a newer car like the 9-5. easy to do that and the temperature sensor at the same time (though the sensor itself should be highly reliable, the connections might not be).
I agree on the parts in Canada thing. Almost always cheaper/easier to order from eeuro, but speed of delivery can sometimes be an issue simply due to the border (not eeuro).
Water pump will usually weep/leak progressively for a week before failing, and you'll get a coolant low message. Serp belt and pulleys are good to do at the same time or every 60k. check over hoses also.
