I live in Palm Springs, CA and struggled for years with pre-ignition/detonation after 15-20 minutes of driving in hot temps in my '07 9-5 Wagon. Sometimes so severe that the car barely accelerated at all, took 15 seconds to reach 30 mph, clearly Trionic was retarding timing and pulling boost BIG TIME. Even a new aluminum intercooler didn't completely resolve the problem so I just lived with it and chalked it to heatsoak.
A few months ago, a friend happened to casually inform me that the 91 octane we get in CA simply isn't enough for small-displacement turbocharged engines like the 2.3. So I took a chance and began adding about 16 oz of Torco Accelerator (1/2 can) before every fill-up, giving me a roughly 93 octane equivalent. I've logged about 3000 miles since and even in 100 degree heat, no more signs of knocking/detonation/bogging. Car has never driven better, spool is quicker and smoother. The Torco stuff does have MMT, which supposedly forms yellowish deposits in your engine and spark plugs if used long-term, but it appears that only when used in higher concentrations, my plugs still look perfect.
The higher the air temperature/engine compression, and the lower the humidity/elevation, the higher need for octane. Obviously, where I live it's pretty much the ideal situation for the need for higher octane, but just wanted to reiterate the importance of good quality gas for our Saabs.
And no, I don't work for Torco.
