But we are suddenly seen as the bad guys here in CA recommending changing the oil at shorter intervals than what the manufacturer says.

10K intervals or once a year works well on engines using 6-8q oil pans as long as you check and top off fluid a few times in between.

These old 9-5 engine with just 4.5q of oil, it is better to stick with 5K intervals unless you drive a lot and the engine isn't consuming too much.
