If the belt came off it would have jumped back on as it was in a normal position when I inspected the engine and its operation. I'm thinking the key was unintentionally bumped. The car is pretty well maintained and when symptoms come up like this it's usually not too difficult to diagnose.
The ignition switch failure we had back in September of 2015 (155k) caused the car to quit in the street but then re-starting was almost immediate. Reading posts here helped me diagnose the switch and replace it.
My indie was thinking it could be voltage related and heat induced by these 90+ temps we're experiencing. After describing how rapidly the car cranks after stalling he's not inclined to believe it's the battery. It was last replaced a few days before the ignition switch (9/15).
We'll take it on a short road trip tomorrow to see if the problem replicates. Thx.
