I just know so many individuals these days that do zero maintenance on their automatics and they often have no issues at all.
I think an R + R of all the fluid is by nature more disruptive than replacing four quarts here and four there. I can't give you the engineering behind it, since I'm just relating what the experts also employed at the parts house always told me, which in summary is, don't do anything more invasive than you have to.
I think the whole appeal of these flushes is, a shop can sell this service the car owner and the car owner can "get it over with" in one shop visit. But for the person who does his own wrenching, there's just inadequate upside when you can improve the quality of the contents of the transmission in increments - you can also observe and see if shifting improves in stages. I've especially been noticing small but significant improvements on the '06 wagon.
