ProParts does have a rather bad reputation.
Walbro is the original manufacturer of the fuel pump and assembly, and GM/Delco is the original buyer.
You don't really need to replace the assembly in the Rev 1.X pumps: the ones you can access from the trunk (up through MY2005). Just the insert, for prices in the $100 range. Rev 2.X models also suffer from gauge sender failures, have their filter integrated in the pump assembly, and it's harder to get to, so a complete replacement assembly would be in order.
My research (conducted thanks to responses received on this site) showed an average life in the neighborhood of 135,000 to 150,000 miles (from memory. look it up for the real numbers), with a rather large standard deviation and a decidedly non-gaussian (not a bell shaped curve) distribution. It looked more like a "barbell" distribution, with a bunch of failures centered around 110,000 or so, and another bunch centered around 180,000 or so.
