I've got four Saab 9-5s, 2001-2006 with a combined mileage of about 638,000 miles. I've replaced 3 coolant bypass valves, and the valve was replaced on my 92,000 '04 Aero before I got it.
I've replaced no hoses, no radiators, no water pumps - but I've been primarily well south of the Mason Dixon. I think at least some of the failures are from commuting and errand running, and especially in cold and freezing climates. If the valve can keep hot coolant out of the cabin of a vehicle in NC or TN or LA, that's a good thing. Seems counterintuitive but I think the 9-5 cooling system is better designed for hot weather, than it is for freezing weather.
