As a general observation by myself as a shade-tree enthusiast, the 5 speed manual on my 2005 likes to be slightly overfilled and I speculate you have the same transmission. Smoother and quieter. If someone asked me by how much, my rough guess would be about 5-8% that I would add in 4-5% increments. If I liked spec +5% level via drive test, I would leave it at that. I can't recall if it has a dipstick - I think not and it's filled until oil comes out of the "top" plug hole right above the "drain plug" hole. However, I believe the "top" plug is a difficult to access area without a hoist. I always ensure I can open the fill hole before I open the drain hole - that way no embarrassing situations. Is your transmission filled with the proper oil to the proper level as a start? Is the transmission loosing some oil slowly through a light to moderate sweat? You may find some of the bolts that seal the unit are a wee bit loose. I would stick to the OE (GM)oil recommendation. In the event the whine continues, I would be tempted to source out a "mechanic in a can" oil additive before absorbing the punishment of a rebuild which would be a last resort. It appears as if these tranmissions are solid and long-lived unless abused. I can't recall any complaints on this forum. If you live in a cold climate and someone didn't use the right oil, that could cause a whine. Hope this helps. The fact it happened as you drove up a grade may indicate a low oil level condition as the car would have been at an angle for an extended period. Skol!
