Definitely everyone should look closely at the wire insulation at the sensor plug- mine was dried, cracked and showing bare wire at the plug last time I had the heat gauge/cel/low heat. I replaced the sensor, taped the connector wiring, and replaced the thermostat with an Airtex. Airtex says they have solved the thermostat problem- the thermo was twice the price but I took a chance. No problems since and that was fall of 2015. Longest I've ever gone without the problem reoccurring. Hard to say what was the fix. Just glad I'm not wrenching on that stuff every year or so anymore.
