Thule Raceway 9001 bike rack on 9-5 sedan

I had to drop off my '01 9-5 Aero sedan for an inspection and some other stuff, and since it was a really nice day yesterday, I decided to strap my fatbike onto the bike rack and bike the 12 or so miles back home via some nice trails.
I had never used the Thule 9001 rack before (bought it second hand last year after I got the bike...), and followed the fit instructions pertaining to the 9-5 sedan. Pretty straightforward, but, the Thule manual tells you to first lock the trunk, then adjust the rack and put it in place.
The 9-5's trunk lid is only thin enough to accept the rack's attachment straps/clips at the outside corners. But, the fit of the trunk lid in the closed position is so tight that there literally isn't enough room to slip the attachment clips underneath when the trunk is securely closed.
So, I tried to do the whole thing with the trunk closed, but not actually locked. With that heavy rack and a heavy bike in place, there is no movement of the trunk lid that I could detect, and I drove the 12 miles to the repair shop without incident, having to see the little "trunk lid open" icon lit the whole way. Standing outside the car, I could not budge the rack or trunk lid, even though the lid was not latched.
Does anyknow have an idea as to how to secure the Thule Raceway 9001 rack to the 9-5 sedan's trunk lid, and have the trunk locked?
TIA!
