I just had a weird belt malfunction.
I started the car in the driveway and heard a funny little squeal and then realized that I had no power steering, air, alt etc..
I figured I had thrown a belt or torn one. sure enough the belt was off the pulleys.
When I got into the job I realized that the water pump would not turn and one idler pulley was a bit wonky. On closer inspection the belt had gone behind the water pump pulley and was binding....great!!
I figured if I could cut off the belt I could pull it out from behind the pump pulley.
I removed the PS pump for more access. You don't unhook the hoses, 3 mount bolts and you just push it aside.
I wanted to get some tin snips in there cut the belt below the pulley. Of course they would not fit in there.
I made a "knife" with a box cutter blade welded onto a piece of steel rod. This allowed me to get in there can cut the belt just before it went behind the pulley so I would not have to pull a lot of belt behind the pulley. It worked, and with the PS pump out of the way I could pull the belt straight out.
Great relief to get that belt out.
I replaced the upper idler pulley and am ready to put a new belt back on.
I just wanted to share as I have never seen a belt do this, and it is a head scratcher for a bit.
