Thanks Stephen,
In a rush to post (before ordering parts), I didn't include every detail. My parking lot experience was rather like what you describe. I had my foot gently on the brake for a while, moving slowly in the lot, then I pushed harder to stop, and it gave first before it really braked. It does seem position-dependent: if it feels soft and I release and re-apply it firms up nicely, which could mean it's popped back up to a less-damaged part of the cylinder bore.
I'll try just sitting with the brake applied and seeing how much drop I observe.
EDIT: I just started the car and applied gentle pressure sitting at idle, and the pedal drops slowly toward the floor. Immediate pressure feels firm. Redoing the same process yielded the same result. Guess I will be ordering a new Master Cylinder . . .
With fewer '06-'09 9-5's on the road here I discovered both local dealer and other on-line vendors I checked would have to order from Sweden. So I have ordered from Speedparts Sweden. They showed it as in stock, so they will ship expedited, and I will see how quickly the part arrives. Pricing was least costly of all I found - and 25% of that is shipping.
Thanks again,
Mark in Marine
