When it gets worse, I'll try the targeted surgical approach you advised - cutting away only the damaged edge parts while leaving the rest intact. Thanks also for the removal technique and for the lead on the XPEL product offering... looks like a similar kit currently runs around $70 which is very affordable.
The other thing the PO did was to cover the leading edges of the hood and outside mirrors, and the door aft edges, with a PermaPlate treatment. The funny thing is that stone chips still appeared -- but in all of the other unprotected places! If I had to do it again, I would add covering to the front and rear painted bumpers.
Doing a little Googling, I now see that full clear protective wraps over the entire car's external painted surfaces is available! Can't imagine us Saab owners doing that...
