I am seriously considering the purchase of a 2003 Aero and since I read this board frequently, I do notice some of the common (and maybe not-so-common) problems that you encounter. I would think that owners of the 2002 models will probably be able to more closely answer my questions, but, that doesn’t mean I do not value others' experiences. Anyway, here’s my queries:
1) Blue Smoke - The dreaded “Blue Smoke” signaling a turbo failure - I’ve seen this from the ‘99s and up, however, do you 2002 owners have this problem? Some dealers are swapping out turbos with no questions asked. Does the problem surface again? Is this indicative of the base (LPT) models, the SEs (ARC), the Aero, all three, A and B only, etc.?
2) Gas Tank Thump - Do you 2002 owners get the gas tank “thump” that earlier versions got? Some have had the dealers add a baffle, which would take up space, thereby, limiting the tank’s capacity. Is this still present in the newest models?
3) ECU Problems - I believe that owners of the ‘99 and early 2000 models went through ECUs under warranty….does this persist or has Saab rectified the problem?
4) Climate Control - The A/C works fine in manual mode, but, when set to automatic climate control, it does not get cold. How many of you go through this one?
5) Phantom Door Locks – This is a new one for me, doors that lock themselves while the car is parked? Those keys are expensive, so, do you need to always carry that extra key? Have any dealers corrected this problem?
6) C-Pillar Crack – Do all wagon owners have this crack? Apparently, a seam is filled with lead, but, over time develops a crack. Is this a place for rust to begin?
7) Purchase vs. Lease – I would think that the price of the car should not matter. I cannot write-off any lease payments and I do prefer owning outright. Is the price significantly different one way?
I know deals are quite good now, however, Aero wagons are scarce by me (Long Island) and I would like to choose the color since I tend to hold onto cars for a long time, so, I’m waiting for Saab USA to announce prices for the ‘03s. Thanks for any answers.
