Drama on the highway--wiper fluid problem

Hi, wondering if anyone's had this problem....
I have a 2001 9-5 wagon, with close to 3000 miles on it. It's a wonderful car. Yesterday, it was raining lightly so I used the wipers, and "spritzed" the windshield with wiper fluid. That was fine. Right after the windshield wipers stopped, however, the wiper fluid started *hosing* the windshield--I couldn't turn it off and was I was going 70 mph. After pulling over (tricky, because the wiper fluid will foam up if there's enough on the windshield and it's agitated suffiently, such as with high-speed wipers going), I turned the car off, and of course it stopped. But resumed upon starting the car. Eventually, I ran out of wiper fluid. I can vouch for the large capacity reservoir.
Common problem? Anything I can do? It's a week before they'll see me at the service department, and I have a trip this weekend.
Erika
P.S. It's a pretty effective car wash technique, although I wouldn't recommend it. Oh, and if anyone saw me yesterday on the highway (CA/85), you can stop laughing now. :-)
