It would seem to me that it would make sense to first perform the procedure in WIS call "checking and adjusting the gear position" before proceeding any further. It only takes a few minutes and at least you will know the gear shift linkage is properly aligned. Many things can put the linkage out of alignment including the shifting of the engine as the engine and transmission mounts age. If the problem persists then look further. While you are at it lubricate the linkage near the transmission to make sure that is moving smoothly. A spray lubricant like one of the Wurth products will work without attracting dirt and will be water resistant. You can use some drill bits in place of the SAAB locking pins just wrap something around the transmission pin so you don't drop it into the transmission and remember to replace the plastic plug on the gearbox.
