Wow, I never expected to see a schematic for the radio. After a quick pass through the service manual, I would say that IC 602, a Seiko S-29220A Serial EEPROM on the tuner board (the main board A in the manual) is the culprit.
Looking at the data sheet, the EEPROM has a capacity of 2k bits, around 256 bytes, and a data retention value of 10 YEARS. Think that is the problem?
The S-29220A is no longer available. There are lots and lots of 2k bit EEPROMs out there, but finding a suitable substitute could be easy or hard. Modern replacements are $0.25 or less in small quantities. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable could make a suggestion?
