I am well versed in the V6 , and currently run 2 as daily drivers . Both with over 200k miles . There are two headgaskets front and back , and yes the early ones had failures . The part I used for replacement is Elring 890.662 . Stay away from Victor Reinz , he makes leaky gaskets , especially the valve cover gaskets . I know .
If you could get away with just replacing the gaskets , it still is a very large job . To do it right , and since you have to take off the timing setup and both exhaust manifolds , you really should do the oil cooler , unless it has been replaced . The heads might need resurfacing and the can of worms can get very expensive ...to do it right .
On the other hand , I have done it several times . Regular hand tools , no Tech2 , just a lot of pain , both in the fingers and the wallet . I also recommend slapping in a starter and positive battery lead , although I think they are extinct . I can assure you that some of the exhaust studs will be frozen since 1999 ..Beware . The other tricky thing is the exhaust downpipe flex joints don't like the disruption . Gotta use new headbolts , and they need to be torqued correctly .
Words of Wisdom .....Beware ! Can of worms ....
