What kind of grease? I greases the splined shaft on a 9-5 we purchased in Spring of 2015. The click showed up the drive home. I used Lucas Red Sticky Grease, and it has not been a problem since - about 40K miles. This grease has become my go-to for a lot of chassis lubrication because it does not dry out or harden like some whit lithium lubes.
Problems with steering column spline joints are not unique to SAAB's. My wife's 2012 Honda Odyssey had a 'hitch' when reversing directions (F to R, R to F) when the steering wheel was turned. Inspection of control arm bushings, ball joints, steering rack, and axles turned up nothing. Problem persisted with new struts, mounts, and sway bar links. Regreasing the steering column fixed the issue.
Not saying you'll dodge the bullet, but maybe just the right grease will at least extend intervals.
