Respectfully, you could shim in the shock mount bracket all day long, it will have no effect whatsoever on alignment. Alignment adjustment shims are installed at the hub.
But you are 100% correct that a blown out rear shock renders these cars sketchy at best, dangerous at worst. I've been there on one of my cars and when one or both rear wheels are severely under-damped the car is skittish as hell.
