"It stays closer to 12.3v when running"
This strongly suggests that the alternator/voltage regulator is the root problem, which may have been killing the battery. The charging voltage should be a minimum of 13.2 volts. Basic charging principle is that the charging voltage should be at least 1.0-1.2 VDC higher than the nominal battery voltage (12VDC). I've seen as much as 14.1 VDC from the alternator charging an almost dead battery.
I'd take the battery to a auto store and have it load tested and checked for dead/shorted cells. If determined to be the problem, replace it and with the new battery check the charging voltage. If still around 12.2 VDC, then I'd replace the alternator.
If possible, take the alternator to auto store and have it tested - but removing the alternator on the saab is a bit of a task.
Good luck
