Deja View 2002, line tech I was, Saab denied paying for timing cover labor after my diagnosis and labor compensation for head gasket failure, and head gasket replacement. it was a long time ago.
So VC and Oil box and oil breather pipes and O/P switch replaced along with oil pump o-ring and crank seal then oil pump cover and sleeve over the deeply grooved harmonic balance shaft.
both VC and OIl pumps I let run 15 minutes and all was dry in the shop. Both procedures promptly failed when test driving. the area below the oil pump was tracked and drips of oil fall drop front of pan, and much on sub frame. so, Timing Chain tensioner base seal and o-ring were replaced, and head bolts re torqued. after these steps I ran doe 15 minutes, then 5 minutes at 3500 rpm. let it sit 10 minutes. ran again 2 minutes, and found all engine dry as dust. Drove 2 miles with strong boost requested. looked right away when home... the area below the oil pump was tracked and drips of oil fall drop front of pan, and much on sub frame, AND above the with the top mount "bull horn" removed, the horizontal ledge that is below the T/C tensioner is puddled....
above and left of Cyl #1 is the 3.5 mm oil supply hole in the block traveling up to supply the head
lifters cams and chains with 60 psi supply oil. 95% sure my running engine 20 minutes, and then at 3,500 rpm would have revealed 1) head gasket fail for main oil pressure port containment 2) if the oil leak is a kinetic contact "gap" in the timing cover to head gasket part of the head gasket, or return oil down timing chest or gravity oil collecting here issue......This was enough running to get new leak after above resealing and cleaning.
So before I take alternator and its bracket off and tensioner for access to scrupulously clean " oil leak area " and using Steel fortified JB weld 2 part "poxy" ( done with shop vac in the oil fill tube w cleaning and first 15 minutes w JB still tacky ) ...
I am going to drill out the dead end port in the oil filler tube and add an oil separator can well forward to vent into eng air intake tube above air filter housing....
you guessed it, I am very suspicious saab may have addressed sludging yet this system (may) not deal well enough with ring blow by ( normal ) and still allows positive crankcase pressures...
That ... circle back to a steel head gasket with-out aerobic sealant applied to Timing chest area. and poor design or timing cover casting quality control.
( please restrain comments for just fitting a manifold pressure gage to the crankcase - thanks )
I am a kinetic contact guy and my instincts tell me to hunt the cause of this leak by my methods )
Thanks .. Don
